Can You Paint a uPVC Conservatory? (2026 UK Guide)

Yes, you can transform a tired uPVC conservatory with colour — but professional 2K spraying lasts 10+ years where brush paint fails in 12 months. Here's the full 2026 guide.

Short answer: yes, but "spraying" beats "painting"

Yes, a uPVC conservatory can be repainted in almost any colour — anthracite grey, black, cream, sage, Chartwell green or a bespoke RAL match. The catch is that brushing or rolling household paint onto uPVC almost always fails within a year: it peels at the edges, marks under hot sun and looks streaky on textured frames.

What actually works is professional uPVC spraying with a 2K (two-pack) polyurethane system — the same technology used on cars. Applied properly, a sprayed conservatory looks factory-finished and carries a written 10-year guarantee. See our uPVC conservatory spraying service for the full process.

Brush paint vs professional 2K spray

DIY brush or roller paint: Cheap to start (£40–£80 in materials), but uPVC is a low-energy plastic — standard masonry, emulsion and even most "multi-surface" paints won't bond. You'll see brush marks, drips on the bevels and rapid peeling around handles and hinges within 6–12 months.

Aerosol spray cans: Slightly better adhesion, but coverage is patchy, overspray drifts onto glass and roof panels, and the finish chalks badly in UK weather. Not a long-term answer for a structure you sit in every day.

Professional 2K polyurethane spray: Industrial isocyanate-cured coating, applied with HVLP equipment after a full degrease, key and adhesion-promoter prep. Bonds chemically to the uPVC, dries to a hard ceramic-like film, and resists UV, rain and thermal movement. This is the only finish we'd put our name to — and it's what we explain in detail in how long does uPVC spraying last?.

What parts of a conservatory can be sprayed?

Almost every visible surface on a typical Victorian, Edwardian, lean-to or P-shaped conservatory can be transformed:

uPVC frames and mullions — the main visual change. Anthracite grey on white frames is the most-requested update in 2026.

Roof bars, ridges and finials — sprayed in matching colour for a fully integrated look.

Fascias, soffits and external trims where they tie into the conservatory.

Dwarf walls and rendered bases — finished in a coordinating masonry coating if requested.

Internal frames — yes, the inside faces can be sprayed too, so the colour is consistent from inside and out.

What we don't spray: the glass itself, polycarbonate roof panels (they expand and contract too much for a hard coating to last), and any rubber gaskets — those are masked off and left untouched.

Best conservatory colours in 2026

Anthracite grey (RAL 7016) is comfortably the most popular choice — it ties a conservatory into modern grey window upgrades and contrasts beautifully against brick and planting. We cover the full colour debate in anthracite grey vs agate grey uPVC windows.

Black (RAL 9005 satin) — sharp, contemporary, brilliant against pale brick or render.

Cream and Chartwell green — popular for period properties and cottage-style extensions where anthracite would feel too modern.

Two-tone (e.g. anthracite outside, white inside) — a high-end option that's standard on new aluminium-look conservatories and easy to replicate with spraying.

Any RAL or BS colour can be matched, so if you're coordinating with newly sprayed windows or a front door, we'll mix to the exact code.

The prep and process (and why it matters)

A lasting finish is 80% prep, 20% paint. Our typical conservatory job runs:

Day 1 — masking and prep: Glass, roof panels, gaskets, brickwork and surrounding patio are fully masked. Frames are degreased with a panel-wipe solvent, lightly keyed with abrasive pads and treated with an adhesion promoter formulated for uPVC.

Day 1–2 — primer and base coats: A bonding primer goes on first, followed by two to three coats of 2K polyurethane top-coat in your chosen colour and sheen (satin is standard; matt and gloss available).

Day 2 — de-masking and inspection: All masking removed, edges checked, and any tiny touch-ups completed. The finish is touch-dry within 1–2 hours and fully cured within 7 days.

Most conservatories are completed in 1–2 days on site with zero disruption inside the house.

How long does a sprayed conservatory last?

A correctly prepped and sprayed uPVC conservatory typically lasts 10–15 years before any noticeable fade — and our work is backed by a written 10-year guarantee against peeling, flaking and cracking.

That's a vastly different proposition to brush paint (12 months at best) and competitive with a full uPVC replacement, which itself only carries a 10-year warranty in most cases.

Cost vs replacing the conservatory

Spraying a typical 3m x 3m uPVC conservatory: £600–£1,200 fully finished, depending on roof bar complexity and how many sides need coverage.

Replacing the same conservatory: £8,000–£18,000+ for a like-for-like uPVC structure, more for aluminium.

Spraying delivers 90%+ of the visual update for under 10% of the cost, with no planning, no building work and no week-long disruption. For the wider picture on uPVC pricing see how much does uPVC spraying cost?.

Frequently asked questions

Can you spray the polycarbonate roof panels? No — we strongly advise against it. Polycarbonate flexes too much with heat and the coating will fail. If the roof is the problem, a roof replacement (glass or solid) is the right answer.

What about the glass? Glass is fully masked. If you want privacy or solar control, switching to tinted units is a glazier job, not a spraying one.

Will it cope with British weather? Yes. 2K polyurethane is engineered for automotive use — it shrugs off rain, frost and UV far better than any household paint.

Can you spray in winter? We work year-round. Coatings need dry conditions during application but cure reliably in cool temperatures with the right hardener.

Is it guaranteed? Every conservatory we spray carries a written 10-year guarantee — see real customer projects on our reviews page.
